Old Glory
The Art Deco Mississippi War Memorial Building in Jackson was built beside the Old Capitol in 1940 as a tribute to Mississippi’s veterans. It features three aluminum doors with scenes of battles important in the history of Mississippi. A replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located in the courtyard. Inscribed on the side of the tomb are these words: “May this symbol stand guard over the ideals and purposes for which gallant Mississippians suffered and may it serve as an inspiration to us to shield forever the fragile quality of liberty.” Nearby down State Street is the Monument to the Confederate Dead.
