The original Ferris wheel was designed by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., as a landmark for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The term Ferris wheel later came to be used generically for all such rides. This particular Ferris Wheel overlooks the 150th Mississippi State Fair.
The Yo-Yo is a common amusement ride featured in carnivals, state fairs, and similar events. A variation of the Chair-o-plane, it resembles a series of swings arranged in a circle, which turn just fast enough to be slightly affected by centripetal force. On some rides, there is a tilting mechanism, allowing the ride to tilt up to 10 degrees. The 20-degree tilt seen here is the result of trick photography.
The Schoharie County Courthouse was built in 1870 on Main Street in the Village of Schoharie, New York. The original building was 54 by 57 feet and three stories high. Hamilton Child says in his 1872-73 Gazetteer and Business Directory that it cost about $20,000. A small addition was built on the rear in 1965. A renovation and expansion started in 1998 with exterior repairs. Then, the interior was renovated and the addition built. The cost, originally estimated at about $3.4 million, turned out to be about $8.2 million by the time the work was done and the courts moved back, in March 2002.
