The Hauppauge HD-PVR is a great little device that does realtime h.264/AC3 conversion of HD content from analog component inputs. It is a supported tuner in the upcoming 0.22 release of MythTV. Unfortunately, mythtranscode does not yet support lossless transcoding of HD-PVR recordings. Therefore, for long term storage of recordings, another method is necessary.

Mythweb is a featureful and attractive web frontend for many functions of MythTV. If the user has assigned icons to his channels, Mythweb will also display those icons on the various screens. The problem is that by default, Mythweb squashes these icons into a small sqaure regardless of their original aspect ratio. This makes them look deformed and unattractive. I wanted to make some changes so that Mythweb would be able to better handle channel icons and thus be even more attractive.

This script is run on raw DV files created with Kino or dvgrab. It transcodes these files to 3000kbps h.264 video and 160kbps Vorbis audio in a Matroska container. The output files are named according to the date and time the source video was originally recorded. It handles interlaced (60i) or progressive (30p) input. 60i source material is deinterlaced with yadif=3:1, resulting in fluid 60p output.

The Matroska multimedia container is a versatile next-generation A/V container. Once of its best features is a robust chapter system. Unfortunately, the Matroska tools do not provide an easy way to concatenate multiple Matroska files as individual chapters of a new meta file. This script does that.

Monkey's Audio is a lossless audio format that has the ability to store multiple tracks with tag data in a single file. Unfortunately, it's a proprietary format and does not allow playback on all platforms (such as Linux). So if you've stored your music in Monkey's Audio (.ape) format and now want to listen to in on your iPod, or in Linux, you have to convert it to a compatible format, such as mp3.

The developers of XBMC recently disabled the IMDB scraper used to gather movie data from IMDB. It is extremely easy to rectify this:

nano -w /usr/local/share/xbmc/system/scrapers/video/imdb.xml

Simply delete or comment out lines 3 and 4. The first 5 lines of the file should now look like this:

The following script will process all movie files (.wmv, .avi, .mkv, .ogm, .mpg) in the directory. It will create a jpeg still image at the 5-second mark and save it in the same directory as the movie with the same filename as the movie, except it will have a .tbn extension. This is the format used by XBMC to insert thumbnails in the video library.

Capturing high definition video from a cable box via firewire is possible but historically unreliable and very frustrating. I have a Scientific Atlanta 3250HD cable box which is one of the common models used by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and others. Once the Linux box has a working firewire stack, there is a three-part process to getting MythTV to reliably use the firewire connection with the SA3250HD as a TV source.

RealAudio files are practically useless nowadays, yet there is still good content imprisoned in many such streams online. This script will convert a RealAudio stream into a small, mono MP3 so you can actually do something with it. It's brutish but it works.

The Chaintech AV-710 is a good, cheap PCI soundcard with optical SPDIF output and good support in Linux. It uses the Envy24 chipset and corresponding kernel driver which is included in recent Linux kernels.

In my case, I use it with an SPDIF receiver and so I want to output all audio via SPDIF. I went through various different configuration settings before finding one that allowed AC3/DTS passthrough while not corrupting other audio such as MP3 playback.
